Day One Down
April 25, 2006 |
We survived getting up at 4:30am a second day in a row although J and I agreed that it almost seemed harder the second day than the first. Go figure. Yesterday was such a long, drawn out day for me. I thought about J all the time, wondering how it was going, if he liked it. Would he stick this one out? I’m all about needing the answers to all of my questions - NOW. Not that I’m a control freak or anything. LOL
So yesterday afternoon when I was bringing N to Martial Arts we passed J on the road. He was trying to make it home in time so I didn’t have to take all the kids with me but we had planned that I would just in case. You never know what the first day will be like, you know? But when we passed him he smiled and gave a big wave so I knew his day wasn’t horrible. When I got home 30 minutes later I found out the worst part of his day was standing for 9 hours. He hadn’t done that in 6 months so his legs were pretty sore.
But then he gave me the run down of how things went and what he really liked about the job and we talked about all the pros that seemed to pop up in comparison to his old job.
- New: Regular schedule, J always knows what hours he will be working as this never deviates
- Old: Hours varied - some days 8 hours shifts and some days 13+, never knew what he was walking into one day to the next
- New: Work is 10 minutes from the house - less gas and way less wear and tear on his truck
- Old: 40 minutes each way, $60 a week in gas (6 months ago) heavy wear on his truck, lots of traffic, slippery roads, etc.
- New: Managers are very respectful to the employees and conscious of their happiness and well-being in the job
- Old: Boss could give a shit if the employees were happy as long as they were making her money
- New: Benefits - medical, dental, vision, life, 401k, profit sharing, paid vacation
- Old: No benefits beyond paid vacation
- New: Friendly co-workers. Everyone introduced themselves and shook J’s hand. He said everywhere he saw people they were all smiling and content. No one seemed unhappy at their job
- Old: Everyone was crabby all the time, fighting with each other
- New: The job is easy. No stress or crazy quotas. No pressure to do everything himself - shift supervisors work right alongside their team
- Old: The projects were difficult - J felt like he had the weight of the entire company on his shoulders even though he wasn’t even sharing in the profits. High stress which led to major health problems
So it’s obvious to both of us that while this job may get a bit boring for J it’s one that he can definitely do long term. And be happy in. And the hours are definitely nice. The kids loved having him home in the middle of the afternoon. Of course this new schedule seriously cut into my primetime TV viewing but that’s what TIVO is for right? LOL

It sounds like a good change. It’s really awful when you have a job that makes you dread going to work We all spend too many hours at work to be unhappy there.
Sounds to me like being a bit bored after time, is MUCH better than being MISERABLE!
Wow it sounds like he is going to love his new job. There’s nothing worse than having to work somewhere that you’re not happy in.
