It’s Here!
March 21, 2007 |
So, remember the other day I told you that I found this over here? Today’s the day the Spring Reading Challenge begins. I’m excited! It’s just the kind of motivation and challenge that I need. I love to read and I have always been a voracious reader. I have proudly passed that trait down to my oldest daughter. She actually received an award at the end of the school year last year naming her just that - Most Voracious Reader. LOL
I originally was going to pick 5 books but I realized there were actually 6 that needed my immediate attention. 2 I’ve borrowed and need to return to my father, 2 are brand new (hello! must read right away!) and 2 have been sitting in my to-be-read pile for FAR too long. In going through my bedside table/cabinet I discovered that there were even more books that have been neglected for a very, very long time. Reading is the one thing I’ve let slide as much as personal hygiene since I’ve undertaken this endeavor known as motherhood. So in the spirit of jumping on the bandwagon, keeping up with the Joneses and biting off more than I can chew I give you my books for this challenge and beyond:

The stack on the right is the group of 6 books that I’m going to work on first.
State of Denial - by Bob Woodward. I borrowed this book from my Dad when I stayed at his house in January when my mom was in the hospital. Seems I need to get it finished and returned to him.
Yankee Lawyer, The Autobiography of Ephraim Tutt - This book also belongs to my father. He gave it to me to read last fall as he thought I’d enjoy it since I was working for a lawyer. I read a couple pages and it promises to be an entertaining read.
This Day in the Life - edited by Joni B. Cole, Rebecca Joffrey and B.K. Rakhra. This is the second book of its kind put out by these women. They are diary entries from women all across America. I loved the first book and don’t know why I waited so long to get this one but I purchased it last week so I must get to it right away. LOL
Confessions of Super Mom - by Melanie Lynne Hauser. I realize I’m probably the only one left in the blogosphere that hasn’t read this book but I bought it last week also and it too is at the top of my must read list.
The Hidden Feelings of Motherhood - by Kathleen A. Kendall-Tackett, PH.D. I have owned this book for over 2 years. In fact, since I started severely feeling the effects of stress, depression and burnout. I could never get myself to read it before but now I am making a serous commitment to finish it before I am fully entrenched in this Stay-At-Home thing again.
The Homework Myth - by Alfie Kohn. I was given this advance reading copy a long time ago and was never able to devote any time to it. For that reason alone this time I will complete it and review it by June 21.
The stack on the left is comprised of books I found when I cleaned out my bedside cabinet. Most I’ve been given as gifts, some longer ago than others. Some I’ve been given by my mother-in-law as she likes to pass them along instead of allowing them to clutter her house once she’s read them. Some I’ve picked up along the way and have meant to read or started a thousand times but never finished. If I get through the 6 above and there’s still time left in the challenge I’ll move on to these.
In The Meantime - by Iyanla Vanzant. I used to watch Starting Over when it was on TV. Anyone else? I loved that show and always loved Iyanla’s style of teaching so I purchased some of her books and a workbook.
Marley & Me - by John Grogan. The subtitle says it all - “life and love with the world’s worst dog”. I think I’m going to read this one to my children each day. With all the misbehavior our own dog engages in I bet they’ll relate.
She Wanted It All - by Kathryn Casey. My mil gave me this one. It’s one of those true crime stories that she loves. I think I saw some of this story on Dateline. I used to love stuff from the true crime genre.
Gatekeeper - by Archer Mayor. Mr. Mayor is a Vermont author and I tend to try to read as many Vermont authors as I can, being that I live in Vermont and all. He writes mystery novels with the same cast of characters in each one but the stories stay fresh and unique. I can’t believe I haven’t read this one already to be honest.
Before You Know Kindness - by Chris Bohjalian. Mr. Bohjalian is another Vermont author that I actually became familiar with when his book Midwives was selected for an Oprah Book Club.
The Partner - by John Grisham. Back in the day, before kids, when I used to read all of the time I had a thing for the legal thrillers. John Grisham really was the founder of that popular movement and everyone would give me Grisham books for gifts. I know I started this book along time ago and now I want to finish it and clear it out of my collection.
Lastly - there are 2 books in the middle between those 2 stacks. Those are 2 workbooks I purchased to go along with other books I intended to read. I have finished one of the books, the other is in stack number 2 in the photo. I intend to complete both of those workbooks between now and June 21st also. I know they aren’t so much about reading as part of the challenge but hey they are books aren’t they? One is the Financial Peace Planner and the other is Living Through the Meantime
So, some list huh? If I just get the first stack done I will be very happy.
Okay, I’m off to read!

I love that your daughter was named Most Voracious Reader — that’s awesome!! Thanks for joining in the challenge. I hope you enjoy all your books!
You sound like me gathering books all over the house. This is an interesting list. I hope you get through many of them during the challenge!

No, you’re not the only one who hasn’t read Melanie Lynn Hauser. I guess when you finish, that title will belong to me. Not that I don’t want to read the book… hopefully I will one of these days.
Marley and Me is a great book. Just keep some Kleenex nearby.
You’re not the only one, I haven’t read Confessions of Supermom either. It sounds pretty funny though, I’ll have to check it out.
Nope, you’re not the only mother who hasn’t read that book..I never even heard of it until now…I’ll have to check it out!
Great list! I am another mom who has not read that book. I am in the middle of Marley and Me and am LOVING it.
Great list! I’m looking forward to your review on the Yankee Lawyer book. Happy Reading! =)
Yeah–good list. I think that if my daughter’s teacher gave out a most voracious reader award, she would win it, too!!
Sounds like a great list! Can’t wait to hear what you have to say about State of Denial and The Homework Myth…they’re both on my “someday” list (along with 30,000 other books).
Couldn’t help but laugh…I just cleaned out my nightstand and found The Partner, too. Don’t even remember where it came from.
What a great list! I’m looking forward to the reviews and I wrote a couple down myself. Happy reading.
I loved Marley and Me, but some of it is REALLY sad. I don’t know how old your children are, but you might want to just read the funny parts to them. My favorite phrase…..”I think we just me the father.”
I mean…”met”
You have my interest piqued with some of these titles. Can’t wait for the reviews. I was just wondering if I will have time for all the reviews, what with reading the books on my list. LOL! But I am thinking I can read them after the challenge is over and begin adding to my master list and planning for the fall reading challenge. =)
