Yesterday we had to go to a picnic hosted by the company Jeff works for. It was at the lake we live next to and there was going to be swimming and games and a magician for the kids and a band and food - lots and lots of food. What wasn’t part of the deal? The rain - torrential rain. Truly a downpour in the worst sense of the word.

We decided to go anyway. Nick was all psyched up for the steamers being served at 12pm. He loves those clams! There was a tent set up that was closed around the corners but open in the center of each side. We had to park a considerable distance from the tent and walk across the soggy grass with one umbrella for 6 of us.

There weren’t too many people there but Jeff’s direct supervisor and her supervisor were there and acknowledged Jeff and met his clan. Good visibility for Jeff so he can get into that management position he so badly wants.

Then it started. The little girls having to go potty. Every 5 minutes. And the bathrooms? Over at the beach - across another big, soggy field. We have had so much rain in the Northeast this summer that whenever it rains the water just pools on top of the grass as it has no where left to absorb into. The ground is thoroughly saturated. Ask the poor people in Massachusetts. They’ll tell you.

After 2 trips Lauren gave up staying dry and started running off ahead - getting completely soaked and laughing her foolish little head off. People noticed her pretty quickly as she was running in circles, in the rain with her tongue sticking out trying to catch the raindrops. I soon stopped trying to get her to come inside the tent and just laughed at her antics along with everyone else.

There was a magician and we did play some games but the band bowed out because of the whole water vs. electricity dilemma. The food was very good but the poor banquet people were soaked to the bone from going back and forth between their trucks and the tent. But everyone was in good spirits despite the rain and they all seemed to learn something from the kids. Rain’s not so bad in the summer - in fact with the right attitude, like Lauren’s, it can be a lot of fun.

I’d pay money for some rain right now! We’re melting here!

We’ve had so much rain here too but your daughter sounds like she was making the best of a wet situation - kids are so funny!

Glad you all had fun in spite of the rain! Yes we can often learn so much from kids
