Now What?
My former employer just called and offered me a temporary job. Another attorney is leaving the firm to move to a court position in October. She was up front with her secretary about the career change and her secretary applied for and was offered a position at another firm that starts in two weeks. Since they are being charged for my unemployment I can’t think of any justifiable reason to refuse this job offer without ending my benefits immediately. My children have asked me not to go back to work. Ever. My 5 year old has asked to never be sent back to a certain daycare again either.
I have no idea what to do.
So much has changed here at home in the last month…

Geez. Just what you needed, huh? Wish I could offer some advice…but I’m afraid you’re gonna have to follow your heart on this one.

Oh dear, part time wouldn’t be so bad would it?

I think kids will always beg their mom (or whoever is their main caregiver) not to take a job. My mom went back to work when I was little. I didn’t like it, but I survived!

You only get one chance with the kids. They will be grown and gone before you know it. They want you home for a reason: you’re their mom. What’s wrong with that? Life is about preserving quality family relationships, and that takes time and presence.
Your kids will “get over it” if you return to work, but later they may not want you around like they do now. There’s no substitute for mom but your employer can find somebody else. Benefits can be purchased independently. Make your kids a priority and it will pay off big time when they’re older. Promise - been there.
