Overheard

October 21, 2004 |

Jeff had a doctor’s appointment the other day and recounted a conversation to me that reinforces why I love our country doctor so much. This exchange took place between our doctor and his nurse outside the closed exam room doors.

“There’s an emergency case that you need to see before you go in and see this one”, indicating my husbands door.

“Really?” said the doctor. Jeff could hear him looking through the chart.

“So let me see if I have this straight”, the doctor says. “He cut his finger at 7 o’clock this morning, worked all day and is now in here demanding to be seen, calling it an emergency. The emergency was 12 hours ago. He can wait.”

“But it’s bleeding.”

“Then wrap it. I’ll be there when I’m done with this patient.”

And he opened Jeff’s exam room door with a flourish. He didn’t rush through Jeff’s exam either. He listened to his symptons, did a thorough exam, gave him some sample medication and a lab slip, shook his hand and then left.

I wonder how the other guy’s exam went?
