Today’s His Last Day

July 30, 2004 |

:sun3-ani: Today is the last day for the little daycare boy I told you about and I am feeling the loss. I spent the evening last night making a scrapbook for him with all of the photos I could find from the last 2 years he’s been here. I made a page for each one of his friends, as they have all been here for 2+ years as well, and then I made a couple of pages of pictures of him from his time here.

I also filled his pencil box with new supplies. I give each one of the children a 3 ring binder filled with blank paper and a pencil box filled with their own supplies that they can pull out any time they feel like being creative. They can make what they like with crayons, pencils, glue, scissors, glitter and so on. I filled his notebook with fresh paper too.

I’ve washed his nap time blanket so that he could take it home with him. The blanket he’s snuggled down with every day for the last 2 years at nap time. The blanket that’s his to keep now.

We’ve had a pizza party at lunch time and we will be having a make-your-own ice cream sundae party at snack time this afternoon. We’ll play in the sprinkler and continue to exchage hugs and I’ll miss you’s.

He brought me a present this morning and he was so proud. The Apple Scented 3-wick candle was nice. The $50 gift certificate was too. But the best part of the entire package? The card. The card that reads:

The ways you treat me and yourself teach me how to treat the world. You have made an impression on me that will last a lifetime and I am forever grateful.

Then below:

You have been such a huge influence on R**** and we are so thankful and will miss you deeply. Thank you for always being there for R**** the past 2 years.

And then it was signed by Mom and the little boy.

I’m trying really hard to hold it together today. And so is he.

You sound like the kind of caretaker that children will never forget.

Wow, Julie, I have tears in my eyes. It’s hard to lose a child that you’ve kept for so long. It starts feeling like they are one of your own because they are around so much… especially the ones that are well-behaved. I’m sure the lil’ guy will not forget you!
